The visual hierarchy should follow information hierarchy

Display less important content further down the page. When it comes to size, the largest elements on a page get the most attention. When it comes to position, the elements at the top of a page get the most attention.

Apply these common-sense principles of visual hierarchy to homepage elements.

Place the most important content (logo, CTA, value proposition, navigation menus, etc.) above the fold and make it large. Correlate the size and position of the content with its relative importance.

Previous Visually distinguish separate content blocks
Next Avoid pointless, extra design elements that unnecessarily increase cognitive load
